About the event

The "Introduction to Three-Dimensional  Electron Diffraction (3D ED) / MicroED" workshop is designed to provide  participants with a basic understanding of the principles, techniques, and  applications of Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction (3D ED) and MicroED in  the field of structural analysis.

Three-Dimensional  Electron Diffraction (3D ED) is a powerful method that allows the  determination of atomic structures from nanocrystals that are too small for  traditional X-ray crystallography. MicroED, a specific implementation of 3D  ED, uses transmission electron microscopy to collect electron diffraction data  from submicron-sized crystals.

Throughout the workshop, participants will engage in practical, data analysis sessions, and discussions to reinforce their understanding of the concepts. The workshop will be led by experts in the field who have extensive experience in 3D ED and MicroED techniques.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid foundation in 3D ED/MicroED and will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to embark on their own structural biology projects using these cutting-edge technique.

During this workshop, participants will gain practical and theoretical knowledge on the following topics:

1. Introduction to Three-Dimensional Electron Diffraction (3D ED) and MicroED ( Dr Kasun Athukorala and Dr Hongyi Xu) 

Comparison with X-ray crystallography and other structural determination methods

Advantages and limitations of 3D ED/MicroED

2. Sample Preparation for 3D ED/MicroED ( Dr Kasun Athukorala ) 

Techniques for obtaining suitable nanocrystals

Sample preparation and optimization

3. Data Collection and Processing ( Dr Hongyi Xu, Dr Kasun Athukorala)

Principles of electron diffraction

Imaging and diffraction modes in transmission electron microscopy

Data collection strategies for 3D ED/MicroED

Image processing and data reduction

4. Data Analysis and Structure Determination ( Dr Hongyi Xu and Dr Kasun Athukorala)
